Clan Lockhart Newsletter Last UpdatedOct 29, 1999 |
Castle & KeyVol 5. No.2 - Newsletter of the Clan Lockhart - Spring 1998 Castle & KeyPresident's MessageAfter 7 months of wading through countless IRS forms, with completion of and later withdrawing our 501-C-3 application for non-profit society. We were unable to obtain the Charitable status of the C-3 because we are a family society with limited membership and income mainly from dues, but it was worth the try. And we are happy to accept C-7 non-profit status which enables us to forgo yearly income tax. We should also get a break on postage for our newsletter which will certainly save us money. This has been confirmed by phone and now I am awaiting the paperwork. The newsletter is late again partially due to the arrival of 10 puppies, [all but 2 of which have flown off to new homes], and mostly due to my incompetency with computers. I had the newsletter almost completed when one of my children, probably the 8yr old, apparenly wiped out my hard drive somehow including all the files, while playing Reader Rabbit. You must understand that I am one of those non-mechanical people who doesn't even know how to set the VCR to record ahead, or program my microwave to defrost. So, consequently I did not have most files including the newsletter backed up onto a disk. My cousin has just showed me how - so how it should not happen again. After having our computers wiped out last summer by Lightning - I mentioned to Gerry Lockhart that "I couldn't believe this has happened to me again, my computer HATES me what did I do?" He wrote back with "Dolly, didn't you know that computers are evil? They lure you in, letting you believe you are gaining ground with them, then they'll strike unexpectedly when you're most vulnerable." Well, I for one am inclined to believe that!!! We will be back on track shortly with another newsletter out the end of August, and I can happily say that finally a member has taken pity on me and has volunteered to take over the newsletter production. This is an immense help to me after 5 years as I have so many responsibilities and have fallen behind in the paperwork of Clan business. Saving the best news for last - but not by any means last!!! We have a wonderful new Lockhart Web page and a sample is enclose in the issue. In one week - we suddenly had 2 web pages as Gerry Lockhart and Jacki Riffey each designed one simultaneously. Amazing!!! Well, they combined them onto Gerry's and linked to Jacki's Genealogy. No small feat!!! They have both done an excellent, excellent job. We have had numerous hits for sample newsletters and genealogy inquiries, so it is definitely working well. Jacki deserves our excessive praise for her efforts in forwarding all the genealogy to the membership lists. If you have not sent your EMail address in to her.... please do - so you don't miss out on that one note that could be related to you. Our next gathering will be at the Anne Arudel Scottish Games, MD on Saturday, October 10th, 1998 for our Annual Membership Meeting. It is a busy weekend for Annapolis so get your hotel reservations in early. Contact me for hotel info Dolbaker@aol.com. More details in the next newsletter. We are currently signing up for Stone Mountain Highland Games in Georgia on Saturday and Sunday, Oct 17th. Holli is planning a big event so if you are nearby try to attend and give her some support. Games UpdateSouthern Maryland Celtic Festival - April 25, 1998 As usual, our Clan outing of the season has yet to disappoint us. The weather was wonderful and those Pipe bands really know how to get the blood pumping. We had 5 visitiors sign in at the Lockhart tent including 2 new Lockharts we hadn't met before. Pam Smith kindly gave me a break to do some brousing around. They had living History camps and Sheep to Shawl demos in addition to the normal Clan challenges and athletic events. My favorite of course is always the "Knobby Knees Contest". It was a really nice day!!! - Dolly Baker Virginia Scottish Games - July 27 & 28, 1998 Well this year was a big one, the largest I think they ever had. Even the weather cooperated this year bringing us temperatures far below the norm of 100+ degrees. It was ther 25th Anniversary and 90 clans and societies turned out this year. Its always a thrill to see "Lockhart" in print, and know that we are here to stay I dragged along some 16yr old muscle in the form of a cousin from the Scott Clan to set up the tent, and had a chance Saturday morning to chat with returning members, david & Colette Lockard and member Mary Lumsden before I had to leave the tent in the capable hands of Deanna & Jim Dodd and daughter Denise until late Sunday afternoon. They did a great job - I wish I could have been there more but had people flying and driving in from AL, FL and Mass to pick up puppies. We had a large turnout of members and couples totalling 15 signing in. 6 new Lockharts and it was terrific to see our own Life member & FSA Scot, Byron "Scott" Parham. Deanna & Jim gave our so many brochures & applications, we ran out!!! Our new mascot, as yet unnamed, graced the table wrapped in a Tartan sash, bedecked with Scottish pins from the various games we've attended. he is a very realistic, life-sized, toy Sheltie [looks like a miniature Collie], and several people actually came up to pet him. I know he had an ear turned to the Fabulous music of the "Seven Nations" over in the pub tent. He needs a name - so be thinking, we may have a contest in January with a clan pin or a "Wee Scottish Dog" or something as a prize. As far as dogs go, it was nice to see the final sheepdog demonstrations performed by Dr. Gib McLaughlin & his talented Border Collies. After 23yrs with the Virginia Scottish Games he's retiring and we'll all miss that exciting performance. - Dolly Baker & Deanna Dodd
