Vol 5. No.1 - Newsletter of the Clan Lockhart - Winter 1998 Castle & Key

President's Message

I would first like to tell you all that the incorporation process is now complete and our non-profit papers have been sent in to the IRS, all 20 pages. I have had to send them numerous additional forms and I am still awaiting word on that - but I must say that it was almost as much fun to complete as income tax. They are probably waiting to inform us so that I'll end up having to do Income Tax for us. What fun!!! We are now officially Clan Lockhart, Inc. and checks for membership dues can be addressed that way.

The official Clan documents have been changed accordingly and please contact Elaine for new membership cards, and Bylaws if you need a revised copy.

We have a number of announcements this issue and some great photos sent in by Jeff and Alisa Lockhart of their trip to Lanark, Scotland several months ago.

It is time now to put together a nominating committee for the election of new officers in time for the October Annual Membership Meeting. We need three people to volunteer as soon as possible. It is very easy to do and only requires a few mailings only to nominees.

The duties of the Clan Board of Directors are outlined in the Bylaws booklet. And I would like to say that there are a few people who do a great deal of work for the clan, our Board members, our Membership Secretary, Elaine and our Genealogy Compiler, Jacki to name just a couple. There are also members who donate genealogical records, book and photos. I would like to express my appreciation to all of you who give of yourselves to help the clan move forward. We can use all of the help that we can get as everyone of us has family and job responsibilities that we must divide our time between. Holli has been doing a wonderful job with the Lending Library, and we have the newsletter and several other committees with duties that need attention. So if you can help, please contact Dolly. And if not this year.....maybe next!!! Again, Thanks you ALL !!!

- Dolly Baker

Stone Mountain Games, GA

Holli Lockhart-Amos and her family really enjoyed setting up a Lockhart information tent at our first appearance at the Stone Mountain Games. She was thrilled to be showing off her newly made kilt in the Lockhart Tartan. She was visited by at least 2, Georgia Lockharts and passed our brochures as they broused through the display books on Lockhart history.

Holli was kind enough to let me share part of her annual, family Christmas letter with you because I was quite touched with how much joining this clan has meant to her, and I'm sure many others may feel the same.

She had been doing some research on her Lockharts and was thrilled to find her great-grandparents names at the Mormon Family History Center in Roswell, GA. In the process she found us and did a Clan tent at the Stone Mountain Games. She writes:

" We now have our own Tartan (family plaid). I kept thinking how proud Dad would have been to see our family represented this year. Afterwards I went to the cemetery and tied a piece of our Tartan to his headstone. I know he sees it! He was really into our Scottish ancestry and passed his love of it to me!"

News of Members and Announcements

It is with extreme pleasure and pride that I can accounce that Scott Parham has been nominated and accepted by the Royal Museum of Scotland into the Fellowship of Scottish Society of Antiquaries and may use the title FSA Scot following his name. This is a great honor and is well deserved after many [20] years of charitable service to the Scottish community. It is the second oldest organized professional honor society in Britian, dating from the 1790's, second only to the Royal Academy in London. CONGRATULATIONS Scott !!!!!

Congratulations to Life members, Marie and Jack Williams on the birth of their second son, James Gideon Williams, on Jan 8, 1998.
Our newest Lockhart joins proud grandparents, members Jim & Janet Lockhart, uncles, members Gerry Lockhart & Bruce and Suzanne Lockhart, and Aunt Life member Carrillee L. Collins.
Bruce Lockhart has been a busy bee [or should I say brewer] this winter. He has produced a Lockhart Beer for his friends and family. He is offering some of it for sale at cost to other intereted Lockhart clan members at $10.60 plus shipping [which ranges $5 to $9 depending how far you are from FL.
Having personally been one of the first to have sampled this fine &quotDark Ale", though I'm far from being a beer connoisseur, I can say that I thought it tasted Great. One of my empty bottles now sits up high on a shelf in the kitchen. We hope to have a bit of it at the October Annual Mtg to go along with the Glenfiddich.
Many thanks to Baird Wallace for his generous donation to the Clan for genealogy.
Many thanks to Elizabeth Lewis for a volumen of her Lockhart family genealogy - Genealogy of William & mary Conley Agan, 1806 to 1968. It will go in the Archives & copies to the CP [computer program]
Lou and Dede Anderson sent a wonderful article about their son Layne who was made the cross country & assistant track & field coach at Auburn University. An accomplished distance runner, he set 10 school records while at the Citadel, and 3 time Southern Conference champion. In 1996, he assisted in coaching Olympic silver medalist, Samual Matete of Zambia.
Daughter, Cynthia as chief researcher for the book by Edward Jay Epstein, Dossier the Secret History of Armand hamer, published by Random House.
Tom & Marie Kilpatrick are awaiting the birth of their first great-grandchild in June. Tom is still blowing his euphonium in the Diamond State Concert Band & Chichester Alumni/Community Band, his fife in the Nur Temple Colonials Fife & Drum Corps and trumpet for American Legion Post 951, specializing in Taps at funerals where he also is Chaplain. He writes " this can get a bit confusing at funerals when I have a prayer book in one hand and a trumpet in t'other." Tome is a multi-talented musician!!!
